Fall and Your Lawn: How to Keep it Green and Healthy Until the Snow Falls

Lawn Care in Fall

While many homeowners think of autumn as the beginning of the end for lawn care, the truth is: fall is your best opportunity to give your lawn a boost. It can actually get more vibrant and green this time of year. With the right maintenance, your grass can stay lush and healthy well into the cooler months and come back stronger in spring.

Here’s how to keep your lawn immaculate this fall, without slipping into winter prep mode just yet.

Southern Ontario Has a Great Climate for Fall Lawns

Autumn conditions in regions like Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, and Guelph are ideal for cool-season grasses. With cooler temperatures and more consistent rainfall, your lawn naturally rebounds from summer stress. Lower-angle sun rays also keep it from burning.

How to Maintain Your Green Grass Throughout Autumn

H3: Mow Like a Pro (But Don’t Go Too Short)

Mowing isn’t over. In fact, it’s still one of the most important fall lawn care tasks. Keep mowing until your grass stops growing. Typically late October or Early November. Maintain a height of around 2.5 to 3 inches. Cutting too short stresses your turf, while letting it grow too long encourages disease.

Mulch Those Leaves

Instead of raking every leaf, use a mulching mower to break them into fine particles. Mulched leaves decompose quickly, feeding your soil with organic matter that promotes healthy turf. It also saves time and cuts down on bagged yard waste.

Aerate If Your Soil Is Compacted

Fall is prime time for core aeration. If your lawn sees heavy foot traffic or feels hard underfoot, it’s likely compacted, making it harder for roots to access water and nutrients. Aeration opens up the soil and improves overall lawn health before winter sets in.

Feed Your Lawn

Yes, you should fertilize in the fall. Think of it as fuel. A balanced fall fertilizer with nitrogen supports root growth, thickens turf, and boosts green colour now, not just later. For properties in Southern Ontario, apply fertilizer in mid to late October while the ground is still warm enough for uptake.

Weed Out the Competition

Broadleaf weeds like dandelions and clover are still active in early to mid-fall. Spot-treating or using an eco-friendly herbicide now prevents them from overwintering and coming back stronger in spring. (Look for iron-based options like Fiesta®, which are effective and safe for cool-season lawns.)

Debunking a Fall Lawn Care Misconception

There’s a common misconception that fall lawn care is simply a prelude to next year. In reality, your lawn is still growing, especially underground. Roots continue to develop well into late fall, and above-ground growth doesn’t stop until soil temps dip below 7°C.

By investing in your lawn now, you’re not just prepping for spring; you’re actively improving your lawn’s current health and appearance. That means greener, fuller turf throughout October and even into November, depending on the weather.

Landscaping Enhancements for High-Impact Curb Appeal

Looking to take it a step further? Fall is also a smart time to install or refresh features like garden edging, low-maintenance mulch beds, or ornamental grasses. These not only polish the look of your landscape but also reduce maintenance workload for the months ahead.

If your lawn and garden beds aren’t quite where you want them, small fall enhancements now can make a big difference with minimal disruption to your outdoor enjoyment.
